How would you describe your shop’s vibe?
We have a really relaxed and social vibe. We’re a family and a large chunk of our clients are our friends. People seem to really look forward to Saturdays in our shop. We often find lads will align their appointments so they can come to the shop together. We’ll regularly have all the chairs spun, facing inwards and everyone will be chatting with each other.
What’s your most popular cut at the moment?
Lots of skin fades. Before lockdown, we were seeing a lot of cropped styles of various lengths, and also shorter clipper cuts with shape ups. Always skin fades though!
What’s your favourite Uppercut Deluxe product? Styling powder – hands down. It’s the most versatile product in the range and we definitely find ourselves reaching for it more often than other products.
Who is your favourite artist to spin in the shop?
We all came up on hip-hop. We listen to a variety of artists new and old. Lots of Tupac & Big, but some current favourites are Roddy Ricch, Gunna, DaBaby.
What’s your favourite style to cut?
Honestly, my attitude towards hair is pretty simple… practical and versatile. I think we sometimes get lost in the idea of hair being art – I really like to work on any styles that are super easy to maintain and bring joy to the client.
What’s the best tip for someone visiting your area
Visit the Transport Museum just around the corner from us. It’s a hidden gem. Honestly some fantastic stuff in there – if you’re into all things automotive you won’t be disappointed. Or, head to the old cathedral that was destroyed in the blitz, pay a small fee and climb up the tower for a great view of our city.
What the best advice for your client before walking in?
Be decisive in your choices, and be open to advice and ideas. I always find you get the most from anybody providing a service when you work with them and listen to their advice.
What is your favourite shop (other than your own)?
If I had to pick another barbershop I’d probably say RPB up in Manchester. Really nice aesthetic, and seem like a great bunch of people. Manchester’s NQ is inherently cool and I think RPB embodies that.
Keeping it local I’d say Kong Streetwear – just around the corner from us. Kong is something of an institute and has been at the same location for many years. They’re a great team, and the store is incredibly cool. It’s really the only place I visit to buy clothes these days – and sneakers, they get most of the hot new releases.
